Born in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. At the age of 10, she enrolled in the Tbilisi Choreographic School. Then, she was transferred to The Bolshoi Ballet Academy and joined the Bolshoi Ballet in 1981, where she danced many title roles as a principal dancer until 2004. she is one of the world’s great ballet dancers who has guest-starred with prestigious ballet companies worldwide such as the American Ballet Theater. Since 2004, she has been the artistic director of the State Ballet of Georgia and the Tbilisi Choreographic School. In 2017, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon for her contributions to cultural exchange between Japan and Georgia and the development of ballet. She is the People’s Artist of Georgia and the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation.
